What is a dry scalp?
A dry scalp is a scalp that’s deficient in our body’s naturally occurring oils. A lack of lubrication leads to inflammation and sensitivity that can cause an itch and flakiness.
How is dandruff different from having a dry scalp?
Dandruff, on the other hand, is a skin condition caused by a fungal infection. As opposed to a dry scalp caused by lack of sebum production, a fungus called Malassezia inhabits your scalp, eats your skin’s oil and triggers inflammation-causing excess sebum production.
How to treat dandruff?
Dandruff can be treated wit anti-fungal shampoos. One of the most potent ingredients that work against dandruff is zinc pyrithione, which you can find in our Blue-tea-ful shampoo bar. To reduce the chances of the dandruff returning, it’s imperative to boost your scalp’s immunity. You can do that by having a diet rich in vital vitamins and nutrients and also antioxidants. Antioxidants help fight the oxidative stress that we undergo due to environmental stressors. Simply put, antioxidants are a defence against further damage. Blue pea flower, sourced from Tea Trunk, is one of our favourite ingredients to use as it activates our body’s master antioxidant, glutathione. Glutathione helps our damaged cells get back to its natural shape and state, effectively reversing or at the very least, stopping further damage.
How to treat a dry scalp?
A lack of moisture is the leading contributor to the onset of dry scalp, so keeping your scalp moisturized is paramount in keeping your scalp healthy. In addition to using milder, plant-based shampoos that don’t strip away your scalp of its natural oils, it’s important to actively treat and shield your dry scalp. Hemp seed oil, rich in omega-3 and 6, is deeply nourishing to our scalp. Its especially potent against damage caused by pollution at a cellular level. Moringa oil, in addition to being packed with nutrients and antioxidants, is rich in ‘behenic acid’ which has been shown to form a shield against pollutants. If you have especially dry scalp and hair, we recommend the following routine:
Step 1: Massage your scalp gently with a deeply nourishing oil. Leave it overnight for your scalp to absorb all the goodness.
Step 2: Shampoo with a mild, plant-based shampoo bar. You can pick between Viva La Sativa Shampoo Bar, meant for dry and damaged scalp and hair or Magic Shrooms Shampoo Bar, meant for severely dry scalp, or The Grape Escape, meant for dry and chemically-treated hair.
Step 3: Apply a conditioner to keep your hair tamed and moisturised. Ever tried a conditioner bar?
Step 4: Follow up with a pollution-shielding serum. Repeat every 3 days for a month to see results.
Being consistent with a healthy diet, and a healthy hair care routine is the key to having a well-moisturised and nourished scalp.
